Home staging is a key marketing tool.  I often hear, “It looks staged!”  “Why do I need to “stage” my home ~ people can see right through that!”  As home stagers we often see “the look”, particularly from the uninformed who see staging as something not real, like actors playing a part on a stage or in movies.

Think about entering a couple of stores.  What makes you stay and look around, and what makes you cut and run?  You walk into any designer store and you will see its products artfully displayed.  A pair of beautiful shoes beside a stunning silk scarf draped over and around the handle of a gorgeous leather “it” bag.  You start to drool and you WANT the whole package.  Chances are, these products are in glorious isolation and stand out from the items around them, noticed and appreciated on their own.

Then you walk into the discount store where you may well be assaulted by various and perhaps not so nice odours, and music so loud your ears hurt.  And then you have to dig to find anything, squeezing between the narrow aisles trying to avoid knocking anything over.

Both of these scenarios are deliberate.  These goods are “staged” in a way that draws the target buyer.  We are attracted to the first store because there is space around the items, they are displayed in such a fashion as to show off their best features and they draw us to them.  The second store also stages its wares ~ the difference is the target audience and what the buying market will bear.  Typical of this type of store, we want to get in, find what we want and get out.  No lingering here!

Home staging is no different.  We want buyers to come in and be attracted, linger because they’re drawn to the ‘product’, and purchase at the price we want.  There is no intent to deceive ~ quite the contrary!  We want to style your home so it stands alone and above the rest.  Buyers can see the features of the listing, not the “stuff”.  Staging is marketing, pure and simple.
